How to use Game Save States
- Download the .state file from the link on the website.
- Locating RetroArch‘s Save Folder
- Once the save files are downloaded, place them in RetroArch’s designated save directory. The location of the directory depends on the platform:
Windows: Save states are generally located in C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\RetroArch\states.
Mac: Save states can be found in ~/Library/Application Support/RetroArch/states.
Linux: Save states are typically located in /home/[Your Username]/.config/retroarch/states.
Mobile (Android/iOS): Users may need to find the RetroArch folder in the device's file manager (usually in /sdcard/RetroArch or similar).
- Once the save files are downloaded, place them in RetroArch’s designated save directory. The location of the directory depends on the platform:
- Download the save file and move it to the correct folder, matching the name of the game ROM they are using.
- Naming Convention
- RetroArch identifies save states based on the game ROM name, so the downloaded save file must match the ROM’s filename. For example:
- If the ROM file is named
SuperMarioWorld.smc
, the save state should be namedSuperMarioWorld.state1
,SuperMarioWorld.state0
, etc. - The save file must match the game’s name exactly, including file extension (if applicable).
- If the ROM file is named
- RetroArch identifies save states based on the game ROM name, so the downloaded save file must match the ROM’s filename. For example:
- Loading the Save State in RetroArch
- After downloading and placing the save file in the correct folder:
- Launch RetroArch and load the same game ROM as the save file is named.
- Open the Quick Menu (F1 or via the RetroArch menu) and choose Load State.
- If multiple save slots are used, they can navigate to the appropriate slot using the hotkeys (usually F3 to select a slot) before loading.
- Alternative Method: Manual Save Location Setting
- If you don’t want to put the files in the default directory, they can change RetroArch’s save location:
- Go to Settings > Directory > Savefile Dir (for ingame saves) or Savestate Dir (for save states).
- Choose the folder where the downloaded save files are located.
- After setting the directory, the saves will load from that location automatically.
- If you don’t want to put the files in the default directory, they can change RetroArch’s save location:
